Save $312 in 13 Minutes - Call to Cancel Comcast!

I have a tried-and-true method that I have used often to save several hundred dollars. I just did it again last night. I called Comcast, told them I was going to cancel my TV & Internet to get a dish & DSL because their pricing was not competitive. I got transferred to their retention department and they cut my bill from the $134 it was about to be in 5 days to $82 for the next 6 months. They also added channels and gave me free HBO. The whole call took 13 minutes and 26 seconds. Most likely, unless I've dropped cable TV altogether, I'll be calling them again in July.

Qualifications: yes, $82 is still probably too much but it's better than $134. Roughly $20 for internet, $50 for a ton of TV and $10 for a DVR is tolerable to me for now. Taking 13 minutes to save $312 is more likely at the moment than my taking 10-20 hours to figure out how to remove cable TV from my life entirely and get setup with everything new I need. If that's not good enough for you, there's always the I Hate Comcast Facebook group!

tried to used the saving code listed on Brads Deals for Coldwater Creek 1/21/10 but it would not go through. Contact Coldwater Creek and was told that they do not post or use any website for additional savings code. So make sure code are valid before you spend your time shopping only to find out there is no discount.

    • Brad says:

Hi Elizabeth, thanks for the comment. Next time, I’d suggest posting it on the page with the Coldwater Creek deal so others can see or assist!

Their site has been a little finicky. I’ve seen the same code not work one minute and work the next. Others have reported issues with how the code is capitalized. There have also been two codes that work at times. As a rule, customer service never knows anything about anything, unfortunately.

The WHH1242 is not working for me right now either, but it was earlier today. As mentioned, I’ve dealt a lot with this over the past couple days and waiting 30 minutes can make a ton of difference. That code should not expire until 2/2 so it is supposed to be working!

    • roger says:

I thought I was the only person to do this. I have done it twice and gotten Comcast to lower my bill and increase the number of premium channels. It works!

    • Leasa says:

Saw wht you paid, that is awesome!! I pay 50.00 a month for cmaaccess.com,which is the only direct cable availalbe in Jasper,TX. If I can get a better deal I would definietly go for it!!!!

  2. T.G. says:

Didn’t work for me. We pay over $200 for phone/internet/tv. They were willing to reduce the price…but only after stripping us of all premium channels, our dvr, web surfing speed, etc.

  3. T.G. says:

UPDATE: I called back to try again. Got a friendly rep who gave us a promo rate of $145/mo for 1 year without any change in services. Savings of $420/yr!

  4. Gary says:

I can’t get the Proflowers 20% discount to work. Is there a code?

  5. sandra says:

I tried to order an item you had featured, a kingston 19-n-1 media reader with free shipping from buy.com, but when I tried to check out they added 4.99 shipping. There was no code.

    • Brad says:

hi sandra, buy.com often defaults you to “standard” shipping, which has a charge. select “budget” shipping and it will be free. it’s a little annoying on their part. sorry, i should have made that clearer!

  6. Michelle says:

I saved even more on Comcast. I cancelled everything but basic cable and internet and my bill is $62 a month.

Now I can live my life without checking the TV schedule because there’s nothing on basic cable.

  7. Mary says:

Have you tried the pears from Harry & David’s?? I ordered them last week and they arrived within a few days. First couple of days they were a little firm, but delicious. I just finished off the last one this morning and am craving more! I’ve sent a box to my mother-in-law. Great price. Thanks!

I met a women in the supermarket who turned me onto your website….I am a huge fan……my 6 year old daughter gets embarrassed when I tell anyone and everyone about it….thank you

  9. Jennifer says:

I tried this last year with Comcast and they aske d me when I wanted them to pick up there equipment!! I was hoping for a response like the one you got but no such luck!! I now have DirectTv and other then the fact that they no longer have VS, I really like them!

    • Brad says:

Yeah, that’s happened to me as well but I just call back and get someone else. That usually does it!

      • JLarson says:

I had a billing question for Direct TV, during the call they gave me $20 off a month for 6 months, $10 credit for HD receiver for 12 months, and HBO & Cinemax for 6 months. Just have to ask them!

    • Deb says:

Brad – I tried this two months ago with Time Warner. My locked in price guarantee , which forces you to be in contract with them – took a price increase of $7.00.
When I called to inquire about my “price lock guarantee, ” I was told that “doesn’t include equipment fees raising!!” grrrr!
I told them I was certainly going to try a dish, service is terrible with them, these boxes are eye sores and obsolete – and the rates are horrid , I was told they would send someone to pick up their equipment and I would be assessed a fee for cancelling early.

I hate Time Warner!!!!!!!!!! I am stuck with them for now, but am counting the days- til that contract ends.
I am happy you were able to “escape ” to dish Brad !

  10. As far as the cable thing with Comcast, do you think it will work with other cable companies?

    • Brad says:

Jerry, can’t hurt to try! :)

You’ll know very quickly (wait until you get to the retention department) if they’ll bite or not. Always try a second or third time if this first doesn’t work.

I think this will work with most companies – you’re worth literally thousands of dollars to them as a subscriber. Let me know how it goes, though.

      • Rich Wilson says:

I called my cable company to increase my ISP plan since our data usage with netflix/hulu was putting us over a cap. Even though I’m an existing customer they gave me the 6 month intro rate of $50/month, when my old slower plan had been $65. In 6 months it’ll go to $75, at which point I’ll shop around and see who will give me the best deal.

  11. Shirley Mellish says:

I saw this website on bradsdeals and ordered Ugg clogs and boots for my daughter.I really have my doubts if authentic product. Cloggs are wearing down to insole only after 2 months. Do you check out every site befor they are on your site. I love this web site and I had faith in what is put on site. Please get back to me and do you know if I can do anything about the clogs. Thank Youi

    • Brad says:

Hi Shirley, I’m sorry to hear about this. I believe the issue was from a Google Ad that they power on BradsDeals. I’ve noticed shady UGG stores from Asia that are not legitimate appearing on occasion. We’ve blocked them but you might have caught one before it was blocked. Anything that is labeled “advertisement” is direct from Google so please don’t consider those recommended. Most of them are OK though but there is the potential for bad apples.

As far as deals we’ve posted on BradsDeals (ie: not advertisements), all are for major shoe stores like Nordstrom or Shoes.com.

  12. adrian says:

Brad, I did this and ended up paying $118 for hd preferred package with the dvr box and highspeed internet included. I think about $50 of it goes toward the 6meg download speed internet service. What package are you on and which internet service?

    • Brad says:

Adrian, that sounds about right. My internet is slower but only costs $19.99 so my total was $30-$35 less. I think you might have one step higher with the TV package, as well.

  13. Stephanie says:

My husband has done this a few times, also. He’ll always have the most recent competitor’s pricing on hand so he can reference it. Sometimes the reps are stubborn, but they always reduce the price!

  14. Deborah says:

I love your website! Just wanted to let you know that the coldwater creek code worked for me. Acually I was trying to order it fast and forgot to put the code in. I just did a live-chat with one of their customer service reps and she put it in for me and adjusted my balance, so I got the savings!

  15. SaysSimpleSimon says:

If you want even further savings, ask whether they can match Dish Network’s 24.99 per month deal. The Comcast customer retention department threw all sorts of stuff at me when I asked. If you love sports, they will toss many of the ESPN channels at you. In the end, I still opted for Dish Network because their deal was far cheaper and included a great DVR, HD, and free channels.

  16. dan says:

I often buy shoes from the website since there are incentives to include a variety of coupons that can save you a bunch of money. However, having said that, more than once I have tried to use some of the posted coupons or codes on your website during checkout and finishline.com rejects the coupon. Hopefully this problem can get rectified in the future and I will continue to try and use them in the future.

  17. Diana says:

I have comcast but only TV services. I have internet thru another company. Do you think it would work for me if I called them?

  18. So True, I pulled the same thing at Time Warner Cable ( we don’t have the optin for Comcast in my area) If you threaten to cancel they always give you a better deal and some free premium channels for a few months for free! People just are too afraid to ask for a discount. I ask for one all the time and most of the time I get something off what ever it is I am buying. With today’s economy it can’t hurt to ask.

    • Deb says:

Not in my area, Time Warner basically tells you to get bent. They offered to cut my service to basic to reduce my monthly rate only $20. That means far fewer channels and no box- to receive HD . I am told the area we live in never has “new boxes.” They are all used and “reconditioned.” HA! Eyesore and obsolete junk.

They could care less if I cancel. I have never had a late payment, yet customer service treats you like something on the bottom of their shoes.

I can’t tell you how many times- I have been lied to about having my account credited for “outages.” Never happens. Rates keep going up , up , up .

  19. Thad Swapp says:

I have looked at several sites and not come across like a web site as yours that tells everybody everything they require to know.

  20. Kara says:

I’m glad you got such wonderful service from comcast. I’ve had them for over and year and have had nothing but trouble. We called to cancel just last month and was transferred to the retention dept. The associate didn’t even make an effort to retain our account. He told us he couldn’t cancel it over the phone but we were more than welcome to pack up our boxes and take them to the local store and they would take care of it. Needless to say, we did just that. They have the absolute worst customer service I have ever dealt with and I have been in customer service for 10 years.

    • Brad says:

Hi Kara, sorry to hear. Their service is notoriously poor.

As always, if you don’t get the answer you’re looking for, I’d call back and try again!

  21. Mike R. says:

I did the same with Sirius/XM last year (have one of each in each car – one company but they don’t act that way) and I got one cut in half and got more service for less with the other. My dad tried not long ago and when he told them he wanted to cancel they actually cancelled his account! I’m about to try again as I recently received my renewal notices.

  22. Rachel says:

Hi there- I love your site! Is there a way for us to submit deals we stumble across? I love sharing :-)

  23. Ida Stone says:

I tried negotiating with Comcast and was also told to pack up my equiptment and bring it in. I’ve been a Comcast customer since the 90′s. I think they have so much money they really don’t care if we leave or not. I have Verizon now with Direct TV and if my bill is below $100 a month I’m happy. Isn’t that pathetic?
I wish it were more like $50 a month. That’s a fair price.Ps. Thanks for the deals Brad.

  24. Lori says:

    We pay NADA!!

We got rid of cable/satellite TV ~3 yrs ago and got Roku. We pay already for internet and don’t miss ANY shows that we want to watch. Our only TV expense is $7.99/mo for Netflix plus any movies we decide to rent or buy through Amazon. Hulu Plus is a waste, IMO. The only ‘big’ expense is MLBTV that I pay for so I don’t miss my baseball games but even that price spread out over the whole season is minimal per game.

  25. Kathleen says:

I would like to know how to get Direct Tv to come down. I hate them! needed a new box in the bedroom and they made me sign a new contract to get it. Then i called them to add another box and they told me I would have to pay 99 dollars for it plus pay the monthly rental cost. Buy the box then pay a rental on it, what’s wrong with this picture?

    would really like some suggestions.

  26. Mercy says:

THIS IS AWSOME!! i been paying $178 for close to 6 years ($99 for the first year) and now after reading this and calling my bill went down to $78 how freaking awsome I LOVE THE MONEY I WILL BE SAVING!! thank you soooo much you ROCK BRAD!

  27. Amber says:

I called but they did not lower my bill. I am paying $59.99 + Tax for TV+Internet. Matter of fact they want to charge me $10 extra if I want HD and more channels.

it’s VERY basic TV with 90s look and feel. Not HD at all. Internet is So So.
