    “10. An Extra 2,000 Points?

Go here and get 1,000 points for each of up to two additional new Starwood AmEx cardholders who spend $150 in their first 3 months.”

–> FYI – link does not work in #10.

Ok so I’m a recent graduate about to start my career really soon (signed contract and start date is in of this year) so I’m really trying to decide what should be my first couple “professional” cards (I have 2 basic ones w/ low limits already) that I will be maintaining pretty much for the next 10+ years.

How much traveling/hotel stays per year would you say is required to really get the benefits (marginal cost/benefit) out of SPG? And what combination of cards are best? I was thinking AMEx Gold + SPG. But I’m also looking at AMEX Blue or Costco card for everyday purchases.

BG Info: Credit Score is 709-719 range. 1st year salary will be $60k+. Will pay off all current credit debt by this year and ALL dept (student loans etc.) in the next year & half w/ expected score of 740+. Want to apply for cards by end of next year.

When I click through it is only offering 10K points bonus. I can’t find a link for 25K points, please advise. Thanks!

    • Brad says:

Hi Ken, if it says “up to 25,000″ then you’re OK.

      These are the details:

Earn up to 25,000 bonus Starpoints – 10,000 Starpoints after your first eligible purchase, and an additional 15,000 Starpoints after you spend $5,000 in your first 6 months of Cardmembership.

I don’t think this card is available anymore :( can’t find it on the America express website.

    • Jay C says:

Nevermind. Found it. I already own the true earnings Costco card.

Is this the best American Express card to add to my wallet. I’m trying to earn some travel miles. Thanks

  6. John says:

Great explanations! I have the SPG and love it. I do have one question on your first reason above, where you mentioned, “Starpoints are super flexible and can be turned into 3 or 4 cents easily and 8 or 10 or 20 cents when you get creative!”

I’ve seen examples where points can be turned into 3 or 4 points (or even a little more) on hotels. With the 5th night free it would be equivalent to even more. However, I’m curious to know how to turn the points into 8, 10 or 20 cents? Can you offer any tips on how to do this or where to look?

Thanks again for the informative article!

    • Brad says:

hi john, you’re right, it is hard to find, say, a $2,000 SPG hotel room for 10,000 points. $300 to $400, sure.

the highest value i’ve had is via airline transfers for international first and business class flights. they’re almost always 10+ cents. granted, they’re more complicated then just booking a room.
