How You Can Pick Up an Easy 200,000 Miles for American Airlines

Would you like to get 200,000 American Airline miles for free? If your answer is "yes" (and really, who scoffs at free miles?) then the somewhat-surprising source of free AA flights is this Chase British Airways Visa.

Book American Airlines flights with British Airways miles

Strange, but true: British Airway Avios take you further in America. Image by curimedia. Some rights reserved.

If you meet the maximum spend requirements, you can earn 100,000 Avios (that's the BA term for miles). You get 50,000 just for signing up and making your first purchase. Earn 25K more when you spend $10,000 in your first year and an additional 25K when your total spend is $20,000 in the first year. Because American Airlines is a British Airways partner, you are able to book award flights on AA using your Avios. The best part here is that your Avios are worth more than standard AA miles when you redeem them, especially when it comes to short-haul flights. Any AA flight under 650 miles costs 4,500 Avios versus 12,500 AA miles.  For flights under 1,151 miles, it is 7,500 Avios versus 12,500 AA miles.

As these breakdowns show, you can get a lot further with your Avios on AA than you can with standard AA miles. Using BA Avios on these domestic flights is one of our favorite ways to use Avios, because you can skip the pricey fuel surcharges that come with a cross-Atlantic flight.

I did this deal last year with the intention of going to Scotland. We haven’t really had the time so I looked into domestic flights. Now I understand the criticism from the other british airways users that there are hardly any seats avaiable. But I was able to get two tickets from Columbus, OH to New York for just 9000 points each way. I want to say there was like a $5 per ticket surcharge. It was great, spending a total of 18k points on what would have cost us over $600. We may not be able to find flights to Vegas, but I’ll take this great deal any day. Thanks, Brad!

The issue here is that the comparison is using domestic flights. When it comes to international flights where there is a distinction to so called plan ahead miles required versus anytime miles there are more seats available thru American for the lower mileage requirement than BA. So it depends on how you want to use the miles and remember you get 50,000 to start the other 50,000 comes when you spend $20k. How long will that take you.

BA’s horrendous extra charges almost make using FF miles worthless on THEIR flights. I recently used my American Airlines miles to book a round trip to Italy. A two-leg Atlanta to Milan, both on AA, only added $5 in taxes/fees, etc. The best return I could find for the dates I wanted was a three-leg from Bologna to Atl that include a BA flight for the Bologna to London leg. That cost $125 in fees. Any itineraries I tried that had more BA flights, especially on the overseas leg, were terrible…some ran almost $1400 in fees (round trip).

I imagine the best use of the Avios will be for domestic AA flights.

I just booked two tickets from seattle to venice, stopping over in london for 3 days and returning from barcelona to seattle after our cruise. Using the british airways miles, the fees only cost us $1350 for two tickets, that’s half price of conventional tickets! I think this deal is great no matter how you go. Anyone who travels internationally knows that anytime you go through London, the most expensive city in the world, you pay the fees….

    • Brad says:

book the international trip using the BA miles but on a partner like AA’s flights rather than on BA to avoid the fees. AA, iberia, air berlin and other flys from the US to europe.

  6. Bryan says:

    Hello,

So I have these 50,000 bonus avios that I would like to use on AA but I cannot figure out how to do this.. I used these steps:

•Go to the BA Executive Club Enrollment page and sign up for a free account.
•Log in to your account, which will take you to the Account page.
•Enter your flight search information in the “Create a Trip” box on the left side of the page. Under “Payment Type,” select “Pay with Avios.” Click “Get Flights.”
•Click the “Include Partners” link on the next page to view available flights.

But when I do this nothing comes back as being avaliable. Is it possible to book the tickets directly with AA and use Avios?

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Bryan

    • Brad says:

Hi Bryan, it sounds like you’re taking the right approach. Let me know the routes/dates your looking at so I can double-check this for you.

  7. bill says:

Brad, does this deal help you get preferred elite status on AA as well?

  8. Rhona says:

Brad, is this deal still in effect?

  9. Gloria says:

Hi, The 200,000 avios must have expired. I clicked on the “go to appilcation” and it just brings up all of the different cards available.
If this is expired it should be noted as such.
    Please respond, thank you

  10. Ramon says:

Right now, Amex is offering 2,000 Avios for every 1,000 MR points. Turn around and use those Avos for AA flights, and you could really come out ahead.
