Most athletes want to make a name for themselves. Beside excelling at their sport of choice, many even have a signature style or haircut or even facial hair. But make way for a new signature — the unibrow. Former University of Kentucky basketball player Anthony Davis is trademarking the usually unfavorable eyebrow style and multiple catchphrases that go along with it. Kentucky fans embraced his style and cheered on the now New Orleans Hornets player during last year’s NCAA tournament with phrases like, “Fear the Brow” or “Raise the Brow,” both of which Davis filed to have trademarked. These phrases have made it onto thousands of t-shirts and other memorabilia all in support of this man’s rise to fame.
“I don’t want anyone to try to grow a unibrow because of me and then try to make money off of it,” Davis told CNBC before Thursday’s NBA draft. “Me and my family decided to trademark it because it’s very unique.”
This led us to wonder, what other athletic signatures are out there, and is this truly the strangest one yet? And most importantly, where can we get our hands on this coveted memorabilia?
- Oklahoma City Guard James Harden’s Beard: An Oklahoma newspaper even circulated beard cutouts during this year’s NBA championship in support of Harden. Fans made “Fear the Beard” t-shirts and posters and donned beards during games.
- New York Jets Quarterback Tim Tebow: “Tebowing” became more of a phenomenon than a phrase as people across America began posing on one knee with their head down and snapping photos of it where ever they went. If you’ve got weak knees, throw this Tebowing t-shirt on to make sure you’re tebowing all the time.
- San Francisco Giants Pitcher Brian Wilson: Another athlete with a beard that speaks for itself, Wilson also has heard the cry “Fear the Beard” during games. He dyes his famous beard black but tells other it’s from the sun making it “tan.”
- Michael Jordan’s Tongue: Though there isn’t a phrase that goes along with this one, Michael Jordan’s drive to the hoop with his tongue sticking out is something everyone remembers.
Whether you’re looking for weird or traditional sports memorabilia, there are lots of great places to look, like Sports Authority or Reebok.
