Shop Smart College Scholarship 2014

For the third consecutive year, Brad's Deals is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2014 Brad's Deals Scholarship!

As a college student in 2001, Brad Wilson launched BradsDeals.com in his dorm room. Thirteen years and one bestseller later, the rest is history. In addition to bringing the best online deals to light every day, Brad's Deals is committed to consumer advocacy, financial literacy, and encouraging people to find their own innovative ways to hack, thrift and save their way to living the good life for less. In this spirit, we annually reward five creatively thrift-minded, frugal and entrepreneurial college students each with a $2,000 scholarship.

The Brad's Deals scholarship (formerly known as the Shop Smart Scholarship) is open to U.S. citizens who are high school seniors and undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.0. If you are a college student going to remarkable and creative lengths to pay your tuition, then we want you to apply.

Tips for Brad's Deals Scholarship Candidates

We've read literally thousands of scholarship essays in the last two years, and we've seen lots of good applications, as well as lots of bad ones. We want everyone to have the best chance possible, so we've assembled a few of our top scholarship essay tips.

  • Check your essay carefully for spelling and grammar mistakes before submitting.
This is the biggest and most common mistake that we see on scholarship essays. When we see obvious misspelling and typos, we think you didn't care enough to put your best foot forward. Ask someone else to read it over, just to be sure.
  • Write an essay just for us.
When you send us an essay that you wrote for another scholarship, it's really, really obvious.
  • Know how you will be financing your education apart from your essay strategy.
Whether you're relying on scholarships, loans, Bitcoin, a Kickstarter campaign or just good old-fashioned bootstrapping, this is an important part of the application.
  • Make sure your strategy is truly going above and beyond.
While eating at home instead of going out is a common strategy, learning extreme couponing and using those skills to buy cheap groceries in bulk so that you can cook cheap meals, not only for yourself, but also make and sell sandwiches to fellow students would be above and beyond. We also see lots of students promising to shop in thrift stores instead of at the mall, but we'd be more impressed if you shopped in thrift stores for old denim that you then doctored with appliques or embroidery and resold in your Etsy shop at a 200% markup. You can take a common strategy like eating at home or thrift store shopping, and then take it to the next level. Take a look at what a few past scholarship winners have done to catch our attention.
We're looking forward to seeing what innovative strategies you come up with this year, and wish all of our scholarship applicants the best of luck!

The scholarship application deadline is June 15, 2014.
