Update #4: this offer is supposed to expire sometime on Tuesday 7/17. The best credit card mileage deal from last year is here again. Sign up for a British Airways Visa Signature Card to get 50,000 BA Miles (they're called Avios) after your first purchase, enough for a round-trip economy ticket to Europe. Even better, spend $10k and you'll earn 25k more or spend $20k and you'll earn 50k more. After signing up and spending $20k, you'll have 125k miles after the bonuses and the standard 1.25 miles per dollar spent. Then, for example, you can redeem 80k miles for a business class flight from the East Coast to Europe. There's a $95 annual fee. BA adds high surcharges to their flights, but you can use their miles on partners like American Airlines or Cathay Pacific. Brad from BradsDeals — My experience is that if you have a significant selection of remaining open accounts, very little if at all. I open/close more than most. I worry more about getting too many inquiries in too short a period than I do about closing, though I have a ton that I leave open. If you don't have a significant selection of other cards AND you carry significant balances, that is a big risk. Closing any one account may alter your ratio of balances to available credit. That ratio is the single biggest thing I've seen affect my credit.

orchidway — If I cancel the card before the 95$ fee hits can I still use the avios or will they require that I use the Chase card to pay?

Brad from BradsDeals — The fee will hit immediately. Better to set a reminder to cancel in 11 months if you don't want to keep it. You could probably also ask chase to "downgrade" to a no-fee card to keep it open on your credit report.

orchidway — Thanks for the answer. I guess I did not make myself clear. I had read that someone cancelled there card and then when they went to uae the BA avios they could not use them as they required the card to book and charge the trip. I thought I was told a year ago that the points accrued were usuable and then had nothing to do with the card.

Brad from BradsDeals — Ah, my bad, let me try again: I'm not aware of any reason why you'd need the card to book a flight. The Avios are at that point in your BA account and are indistinguishable from other BA miles. I've never redeemed BA miles for a flight on BA but when I have redeemed BA miles for flights on other carriers I have NOT used my BA card to pay the fee.

Duquettetamu — You may have answered this already....can you use the mile credits immediately after they have posted to your account or is there a waiting period from the time of your first purchase to when you can actually use them? I need to buy a ticket asap and this would be great!

Unprotected Consumer — It was a total bait-and-switch. They denied my application for the super benefits card and issued another card that I specifically told them I did not want. Now if I cancel the crappy card it will lower my credit score. What a crock!

Brad from BradsDeals — That's nuts. Sorry to hear. I've applied for well over 100 cards in my life and never had anything other than a yes or no. I'd love to hear what else happened. It sounds like there was some interim communication other than the undesired card just showing up in the mail. When/how did they tell you that you were getting the secondary card and when did you say you didn't want it? Side note: if there is no fee, just leave it open.

Lorelai — Brad, you are so PATIENT with all these inquiries/complaints.....God BLESS ya, brother!! :)) Thanks for sharing such a good deal, also. I'm not sure if I'll apply for the card because we don't have time to make use of it (we are caring for 82 year old parents who live with us and we cannot be gone for more than 2 days at a time); I think I remember at the very beginning of these "dissertations (hehe!) that you noted the offer had been given last year, or atleast, at another time? Maybe in a few years, if the offer rolls around again we'll be able to avail ourselves of it! Thanks, Brad, again, for all the sharing you do - and your wonderful kindness and patience!! I'm sure God DOES smile on you (and I cannot think of ANYONE I'd more want to smile on me than our Good God!! :))

CatHammer — Well, I decided to go ahead & give it a shot & it approved in about 10 seconds, with "Congratulations,! You've been approved for the BRITISH AIRWAYS credit card." I hope that means the Signature, since I don't really need it otherwise. My credit score isn't too much above 700 per Credit Karma (Old paid-off tax lien from a business). Maybe the fact that I already have a little-used checking account with Chase (I let it import my Chase ID) with about $5K in it had somethng to do with it?

Brian D — Brad, First off, great work! I'm a deal hunter and a miles fanatic, and you make my searches a whole lot easier, so thank you! I am considering applying for this but I have one enormous concern that I don't believe has been brought up in any past posts. That concern is in regards to the AA bankruptcy. While they hope to emerge as a stand alone company, it is looking more like they will have to merge with either US Airways, or Delta (most see a US Airways more likely). With that being said, potentially the ability to use the avios on AA would be gone, presenting less upside for people who aren't flying to Europe. What are your thoughts on the issue? Thanks!

Three main thoughts in response:1) We've seen a lot of airline bankruptcies and miles never go away so there is no need to worry at that level. (I know you didn't ask that, but just clarifying). 2) If there is a merger with US Air, I think the combined company would be more likely to join Oneworld and continue as a BA partner. 3) Even if AA's future didn't have BA in it, I think it's more than likely that there would be a long time (maybe 6- 12 months) before when it was announced and when it went into effect.

TiffVZ — I signed up for the card when you highlighted this deal a month or two ago so I now have 50,000 avios to work with. What I'm not clear on yet, even after receiving my card and accessing the British Airways site, is how to redeem the avios for domestic flights. Do you do that directly through American Airlines? I haven't spent a ton of time on it, but it isn't extremely apparent to me...

Julie Kahn — Just applied and got a message back saying that the offer is no longer available? :-( Then I went back in, just in case, and got a message about an "application error" (I assume their application, as in sotware, not my applcation) and that I should start the process anew. However, reattempting generated te same message (that is, the latter one). Is anyone else having difficulty at this time?

Brad from BradsDeals — I think you're probably getting that error because you've already applied, for lack of any other elegant way to communicate that to you! If you've applied and didn't get a yes or no, you can pre-emptively talk to their credit analysts at 888-245-0625 to try and get an immediate decision. As always, be a strong advocate for yourself when talking to them!

ITGirlNYC — I believe miles can also be use on Cathay Pacific to go to Asia. Another benefit of this card is every year. they give two $50 (total $100) credit for dinning out at Michelin star restaurants. I have been eating for free for the past 2 years.
