This deal is back! Earn a $50 credit when you open a free Electric Orange checking account with ING DIRECT and use your debit card three times. This checking account has no monthly fee, no account minimums, and no ATM fees. It also pays interest based on your balance. To sign up, push on the "apply now" button on the site. Note that the $50 will post after your account has been open 50 days.

rosiewho — ING will do a credit report check on you before they will open an account. I tried to open an account once and told them I didn't need overdraft or anything that would require credit, so they wouldn't need to do a credit check. They still would not open an account without it. Funny way to get customers.

Dawn at BradsDeals — Hi rosiewho, it is extremely common for banks to run a credit check when you open any sort of account. In fact, that's how I first learned that someone else's social security number was connected to my credit. Yikes!

Curtschuller — it is unusual for a bank to run a credit check when you open an account. ING is the only time I have come across this. I have had a savings account with ING for 12 years and used to be an employee of them, and they still would not open a checking account for me because they said my credit score wasn't high enough. Even though they wouldn't tell me what that number needed to be.

rosiewho — Sorry, Dawn, but that is not true. I worked for banks for many years and no one ever did a credit check for a checking/savings acct. They want your SS #, but not for a credit check.

Aquakut1 — They sure do a credit check on you. I have several accounts at different banks Everyone of them did a credit check before they would even let you open an account. Where did you work and how many years ago?

rosiewho — I opened 2 checking accts, with 2 different banks, within the last five years and NO credit check was done. The only reason for them to do this is if you request overdraft protection - then they want to know more about your credit history. If this was mandatory, no one without a credit history would be able to have a checking acct, which is not the case. A simple checking account or savings account should not cause a credit check.
