Maximizing the Starbucks Rewards Credit Card for Free Coffee
If you’re a Starbucks lover on a budget, make sure to enroll in the Starbucks Rewards program. Using this program, you earn 2 Starbucks Stars per dollar spent on Starbucks purchases made with your connected Starbucks card or mobile app. After earning 300 Stars, Starbucks Rewards users are upgraded to Gold status and can redeem 125 Starbucks Stars for any beverage or food item on the menu.
In late 2017, Starbucks announced that it was launching a co-branded credit card with Chase. The Starbucks Rewards credit card earns 1 Star per dollar spent on Starbucks Card reloads made through the Starbucks app and 1 Star per $4 spent on everything else, so it’s easier than ever to earn free Starbucks coffee.
In this article, we’ll show you six ways to maximize the Starbucks Rewards program with the Starbucks Rewards credit card. Depending on how much coffee you drink, these tips can save you a good chunk of money.
Take advantage of Starbucks Gold benefits
Starbucks Rewards credit card members are automatically upgraded to Starbucks Gold status upon credit approval. Like mentioned earlier, Gold members can redeem 125 Stars for a free drink. Further, Gold members receive a free birthday drink annually and are invited to monthly bonus Star Days.
Starbucks Rewards members get free same-day refills of brewed coffee and tea (sorry, Frappuccino lovers). Depending on how much coffee you drink, this benefit alone can save you a pretty penny.
Earn 2,750 bonus Stars (22 free drinks!)
The Starbucks Rewards credit card has two sign up bonuses: one worth 2,500 Stars and another worth 250 Stars. The larger bonus is earned after making $500 in purchases on your Starbucks Rewards credit card in the first 90 days after approval. The smaller, 250 Star bonus is earned the first time you reload your Starbucks Card in the Starbucks mobile app and pay with your Starbucks Rewards credit card.
Completing both of these sign up offers gives you a total of 2,750 Stars. These can be redeemed for 22 free drinks or food items at any U.S. Starbucks.
Use your Stars wisely for maximum return
Be careful when redeeming your Starbucks Stars. Using 125 stars for a $2 cup of black coffee will give you a lower redemption value than if you redeemed your Stars for a $6 lunch sandwich or fancy Frappuccino.
Use your Barista Picks
Starbucks Rewards credit card holders get eight Barista Picks coupons per year. You can redeem these coupons for a specified drink or food item, giving you a chance to try something new for free. Barista Picks coupons are distributed via email eight times per year.
Put day-to-day purchases on your card (with caution)
Like stated earlier, the Starbucks Rewards credit card earns 1 Star per dollar spent on Starbucks purchases and 1 Star per $4 spent on everything else. Charging daily expenses to your Starbucks Rewards credit card will help you accumulate Stars quickly and easily. For example, $1000 in monthly expenses will earn eight free drinks per month.
Note that the Starbucks Rewards credit card won’t give you the best return on your purchases when compared to other rewards cards. There are a number of no annual fee cards (the Starbucks card costs $49 per year) that offer up to 4% cash back on dining purchases—a category that generally includes coffee shops like Starbucks. Other credit cards earn 2% cash back on all purchases regardless of category.
Use your Star Code at the grocery store
Scan your Starbucks app at the grocery store and earn Stars when purchasing bags of coffee, K-Cups, and bottled Starbucks beverages. Bottled beverages earn 2 Stars per purchase and K-Cups earn up to 25 Stars depending on the quantity purchased.
Enjoy your free caffeine!
