At Least 63 Sears and Kmart Locations Will Close in September

It’s no secret that Sears has been on thin ice financially for quite some time, and many retail watchers are surprised they’ve managed to keep the lights on this long. So when the venerable brand announced late last week that they would be closing as many as 72 stores by fall, no one was exactly shocked.

From a Sears Holdings press release detailing First Quarter 2018 results:

“As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline the Company’s operations and focus on our Best Stores, we have identified approximately 100 non-profitable stores, 72 of which will begin store closing sales in the near future.”

While the financial report says 72 stores will close, the official list so far only includes 15 Kmart locations and 48 Sears locations – 63 stores in total. The official store closing list notes that the missing 9 stores were pulled from the initial list for further evaluation.

When will liquidation sales start?

Store closing sales will start at the listed Kmart and Sears locations “as early as June 14.” That’s not exactly a firm date, but gives us a general idea of when we can expect to see sales start. When will these stores close?

Once again, Sears Holdings is not specific with dates, but does say that these stores will close in “early September 2018.”

Sears Auto Centers at affected stores may close earlier than the rest of the store, as early as June or July. Timeframes for specific Sears Auto Centers are noted in the tables below.

Shopping Online at Sears Will Not Be Affected

Sears and Kmart aren’t dead yet, so we don’t expect to see any changes to their online shopping experience unless they shutter the entire chain.
