It’s that time of year again. The leaves are turning, there is a chill in the air, and to prepare for the trick-or-treaters, we are filling our shopping baskets with all the Halloween candy. Since I subscribe to the “two for you, one for me” candy distribution system, I decided I needed to take on a Halloween candy taste test, focusing on the best Halloween chocolate candy on the market.

I made it my mission to work my way through the candy aisle, so you don’t have to. In no particular order, here are my favorites, and a few fan favorites I don’t care for.

Snickers

Caramel, peanuts, and nougat, wrapped in milk chocolate. As the saying goes, Snickers satisfies. Believe it or not, the flavor does change based on size. I find the tastiest versions being the mini and full size. Pro tip: stick them in the freezer before snacking!

Butterfinger

This was a polarizing choice for our staff. While it ranked least favorite chocolate candy for a few editors in a recent staff poll, I love a Butterfinger. The “one of a kind - crispety, crunchety, peanut-buttery chocolate bar” is great on its own, but smash it up and add it to some vanilla ice cream and I promise you’re in for a real treat.

Kit Kat

Another milk chocolate candy, Kit Kat is probably most famous for its catchy jingle. How many of you just started singing or humming, “gimme a break, gimme a break!” Nibble off all the outer chocolate and then eat the wafer center on its own. Delish! They also have white chocolate and dark chocolate versions.

Twix

Like chocolate caramel candy AND cookies? Then Twix is the candy for you. I also discovered it was the most popular candy in our smallest state, Rhode Island.

M&M’s

So many varieties! Plain, peanut, caramel, chocolate mint, almond, and peanut butter. My personal favorite is Peanut M&M’s, but get the M&M’s chocolate candy variety pack and you’ll have a favorite for everyone!

Milky Way

Snickers’ peanut-free cousin! The Milky Way bar features caramel and nougat wrapped in milk chocolate (or dark chocolate if you buy the midnight version). But get this - if you buy a Milky Way bar outside the US or Canada, you’re going to get a 3 Musketeers

100 Grand

I obviously love caramel, because another milk chocolate and caramel candy bar hits the list. This time it's wrapped in a crispy chocolate crunch. Fun fact, we handed out 100 grand bars last year and the kids went wild for them!

Hershey’s Chocolate Bar

Hershey’s Chocolate Bars and their mini-me, Kisses, feature heavily in many Halloween chocolate variety packs, but… they are a little lackluster for me. But, a safe bet for an allergy-free alternative to hand out to the neighborhood kids.

Mounds and Almond Joy

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t. But if you’re like me and not a coconut fan, Mounds and Almond Joy’s will fall flat.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Don’t come for me! Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are ranked the #1 best chocolate (or otherwise) Halloween candy on almost every list I see, but they are just not for me. I won’t NOT eat one if I am craving chocolate, but I would choose items 1-7 above over Reese’s every time.

I’ve got some candy wrappers to hide from my kids, but I hope your favorite candy made the list!
