How to Use ANA Miles to Travel the World

How to Use ANA Miles to Travel the World

ANA, or “All Nippon Airways”, is a Star Alliance airline based in Japan. While it’s an airline that some of you may not have flown before, its frequent flyer program is very useful for flying around the world. And, of course, the right credit card can help your ANA mileage balance.

How to Use ANA Miles to Travel the World

ANA is a Star Alliance partner, so you could earn miles by crediting your United flights to the program. However, you’ll want to be careful of earning rates, especially in economy. The lowest discounted fares will only earn 30% of the mileage flown, which may or may not be a better deal than crediting to United. If you’re ever wondering what’s the best program to credit your flights to, check out

If you’re a frequent guest of Marriott, or have the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card, you’ll also be able to transfer points into ANA at a 3:1 ratio. If you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points at a time into the program, you’ll receive a 5,000 mile bonus, making this the best transfer deal out there, as you’d then have 25,000 ANA miles in your account after the transfer.

Once you have some miles in your account, you can redeem them for some incredible award flights.

1. Round Trip Business Class to Japan

For only 75,000 miles round trip, you can fly business class from the US to Japan during low season (it’s 85,000 in regular season, and 90,000 in high season). Keep in mind that you’re only able to book travel from US gateway cities that are served by ANA. That is, Chicago, Houston, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, DC, Seattle, and San Jose.

Business class features lie-flat beds, gourmet food and service while in the air, and lounge access while on the ground. Japan is famous for its customer service, so this is a great redemption.

2. Fly Etihad to the Middle East and Africa

For only 104,000 miles, you can fly on Etihad to the Middle East and Africa. I love Etihad, having flown them in long-haul business class twice. I consider it to be the best business class experience I’ve ever flown, but I’m happy as long as my bed lies flat for the long flights to the UAE.

3. Fly from the US to Europe for 55,000 Miles

For you economy flyers, 55,000 miles round trip to Europe is about a 5,000 mile discount than other carriers. You’ll have a lot of Star Alliance partners to choose from for your flights, including Lufthansa, Austrian, Air Canada, Turkish, and United.

4. Intra-Japan Flights

As a Japanese airline, you’d expect the airline to have some decent flights inside of the nation of Japan. For only 5,000 miles, you can fly ANA from Tokyo to Osaka during low season. This chart is distance-based for ANA, so you’ll want to refer to it before transferring any miles.

These are some of my favorite uses of ANA miles, but there are other “sweet spots” in the program! Have you used any others? Let us know in the comments!
