United Extends MileagePlus Premier Elite Status Until 2022

As I predicted in my post this morning about Delta extending elite status until 2022, it didn’t take long for other U.S. airlines to follow suit. This afternoon, United also extended status for its members into 2022.

United Extends MileagePlus Premier Elite Status Until 2022

United Airlines will be extending everyone’s current status through January 31st, 2021. Any PlusPoints upgrades will also be extended by 6 months.

For status re-earning for the 2021 status year, United is going a slightly different route for re-qualification than Delta. They’ve dropped Premier elite status requirements by 50%:

  • Silver will require 6 flights, as well as 2,000 Premier-Qualifying Points, or earn 2,500 Premier-Qualifying Points outright.
  • Gold will require 12 flights, as well as 4,000 Premier-Qualifying Points, or earn 5,000 Premier-Qualifying Points outright.
  • Platinum will require 18 flights, as well as 6,000 Premier-Qualifying Points, or earn 7,500 Premier-Qualifying Points outright.
  • 1K will require 26 flights, as well as 9,000 Premier-Qualifying Points, or earn 12,000 Premier-Qualifying Points outright.

They’re also helping members earn status via credit card. Normally, United cards can earn 500 PQPs after $12,000 in spend, and another 500 PQPs after $24,000 in total spend. Now, they’re doubling the amount you can earn from United Explorer cards, and quadrupling the amount you can earn from United Club cards- more details to come.

Finally, award tickets that are cancelled between now and 5/31 will not have any redeposit fees, and if you cancel an award at least 30 days out, there will be no redeposit fees until 12/31/20.

Details for earning in the 2022 status year have not been released yet.

United Annual Subscriptions Extended

If you have a subscription with United for wi-fi, checked bags, Economy Plus, or United Clubs, your membership has now been extended for six months.

This is no surprise that United also matched Delta’s extension of status, though I’m surprised it happened in the same day! I’m now anxiously waiting to hear what my airline-of-choice, American, will offer elite members. I did receive Executive Platinum status by being a Hyatt Globalist this year and I would love for that status to be extended for another year!
